ZaMiyah Evans- POST 1
Working together not only encourages unity but helps each other understand misunderstandings and finish the task a lot faster.
Every career or class has a goal at the end of the day, which is to accomplish the assignments assigned before the deadline. Within the assignment everyone is assigned a role and/or part they have to do, you’ll will work together to get the task done properly and help each other with any difficulties. Effective TeamWork only works with good communication and strategies.
I know, teamwork is waaaaaaaaaaay harder when you are an introvert. Rather be on your own, get nervous talking to new people, get nervous presenting, and the list goes on. But you recently enrolled in college and with your luck your first class not only gives you a group assignment to work with your new peers but also puts you in group 1 where you are the first to present. Well let’s talk about it because it might have a brighter ending than what we initially assumed.
Do you prefer working alone? Maybe because when you work in a group it feels as if you might be doing the most work or maybe you’ll have a hard time communicating together. I understand all these scenarios because we all have once felt that way. Regardless, have you ever thought of splitting the work, assigning each part together. I know communicating can be hard but have you tried creating a group chat to easily communicate any mishaps. Okay Okay I get it, let’s just say you enjoy working alone imagine doing a project that might take you two days but can get it done within a day with the help of coworkers or classmates.
Well recently as I previously said, college started luckily haven’t had any bumps in the road well not yet at-least. With that being said my first class is intro to communications and so far it has been my chillest class, but to back track a little in total I have 4 classes, but the reason i bring up this class only is because the main point of todays blog is TEAMWORK and this class has by far been the class with the most teamwork. Actually, speaking of that, our first assignment was a group project, off that bat I was nervous but not that nervous because it was over the phone. But she put everyone into groups and gave us our chapter to teach to the class. I was in group 1, the topic was intercultural communications. Reading up on the topic, scanning the chapter that was selected for us, I kinda got pleased with the selection. The topics were culture & communication, dominant cultures, co-cultures, cultural identity, and developing intercultural communication competence.
And these topics sectioned off into the depths in their topic. We, our group, sectioned the topics by page equally and allowed each of us to pick our own pages. We all was very communicative and responsive to each other via text and break out rooms on zoom, on when we were going to submit, when we were working on it, and when we were done. Im sure there’s always things we can work on maybe explaining more if the other groups maybe didn’t understand something and maybe ask more questions. Along with us the other classmates had their own groups it was a total of 3 groups, we had chapter 3, group 2 had chapter 9, and group 3 had chapter 10.
The two other groups actually did really good, I had a good understanding about each topic they discussed they worked really hard and good to make their presentations come together. We also have class leaders that work together helping the teacher remember certain things and help organize groups. The team leaders (Katherine and Alfred) were in charge of doing the introductions and conclusions for each group chapter. They allowed eachother to pick amongst themselves who was doing the intro and conclusions for each. Katherine for group 1 was in charge of the introduction, it basically introduce what we were going to be discussing to the class, although when we was getting started she had a minor technical issue but we as a group kept going giving her time to get situated. Alfred was in charge of our conclusions, basically summarizing our chapter and topics into one whole. Other than that nothing was negative. Everyone in each group was very informative.
Some informative facts I found really interesting were
- A group of people that live within the dominant culture but hold their own values, beliefs, and customs represent a co-culture
- socioeconomic status is the position of an individual or family in the hierarchy of classes. income, education, and your occupation is what determines your position
- And More !
- be respectful of others culture (not saying agree just show some respect)
- be open-minded and willing to learn (not saying be gullible and don’t have a mind of your own, I am saying have a mind of your own but be willing to try/learn new things like the saying “don’t knock it till you try it”.)
- be aware of your own cultural biases
- be patient and understanding (not everyone is the same)
- use active learning skills
- be willing to compromise (not everything is an automatic yes, or easy answer you might have to make a deal here and there “favor for favor”.)
Working together has been a pleasure with the groups, we are all nice and welcoming. And i’m pleased to say I don’t mind group work or presenting after all. I hope you will not either.
Very nice reflection. Good points.
